Got too good to go order. It was chicken and rice and a little bit of salsa. The dish overall was very flavorful with very tender chicken and basmati rice. Simple yet tasty. It was a bit too much rice but for the price I couldn't complain. Lady at counter was nice. Ambiance was clean. Dining environment included sofas on the ground - intended for eating on the ground. Culturally unique little restaurant.

Food is really good and servings are generous - our first time trying Yemen food and we love the spices and their take on the rice and chicken dishes. The fava bean soup was amazing. The garlic sauce is spicy and delicious- a little goes a long way! And no, don't order it thinking it's like garlic bread style garlic sauce. This one has a mean lunch- but it's wonderful. Four stars just because their vegetarian options are minimal and the time when we ordered doordash, one of our side dishes was missing. It's a very unassuming building, parking on the street. It's definitely worth a stop!

We are completely charmed by Yemen Star. When we can, we bike over from the west side. You order at the counter, then take a seat. Your food will be brought out to you. When you're finished eating, go back to the counter and report what you had. You'll then be rung up. As vegetarians, we go for the Vegetable Seltah. Google's AI says this about Seltah, which comes with flatbread fresh from the oven: "Seltah is a traditional Yemeni dish of mixed root vegetables in gravy, often served hot in a clay bowl and topped with whipped fenugreek. Other vegetables that can be added to seltah include potatoes, eggs, rice, tomatoes, and peppers. Seltah is often made with a spice mix called hawayji, which typically includes black pepper, caraway, green cardamom, turmeric, and saffron." Other meatless dishes are found on their breakfast menu, including kidney beans, which are browned in a skillet, much like homefries, and fava beans. Soft drinks are self-serve from a refrigerated case and include a few imported Arab soft drinks along with name-brand American pop. Pro tip: order extra flat bread. Trust me on this.

I visited in the summer, had a great experience, wrote a review, but it never appeared. So, yes, the neighborhood may not be where a lot of folks would go, but I encourage you to go! If you're uncertain, go during daylight. I was there at dusk, no concerns. The service was terrific: friendly, helpful, gave me a bowl of lamb broth while I waited for my to-go order. I don't remember the name of the dish we ordered, but it was lamb and rice, wonderfully seasoned with unknown-to-me spices...just what we were looking for! Accompanied by their wonderful, slightly charred, absolutely freshly made (while you're waiting) flat bread. (Planning a return trip, wondered what other Yelpers might have experienced, which is when i noticed my review had not posted.)

Wow, this was such a pleasurable, authentic experience. Being obviously not Yemeni felt conspicuous at first, but it soon became awesome. I'm guessing hospitality is an important part of Yemeni culture because they soon took us under their wing, making sure we understood our options, what is popular, what goes with what. Their pride in their food was obvious--and very justified, because it was delicious. We loved tearing off pieces of absolutely fresh, crisp, slightly charred flat bread and using it to scoop up a kind of lamb stew, still bubbling in a stone bowl. Loved the grilled chicken and rice also. Make sure to try the Adani tea. We couldn't believe how reasonable it was for all that. The space is clean, tasteful, and bright. You can hear the hubbub from the kitchen (Arabic?), which I enjoy as part of the cultural experience. Can't wait to go back with friends.

The food was excellent. We had the whole roast chicken (chicken on coal) on rice. We were treated to some tasty lamb broth while we waited.
